Ramsbury Airfield Walk and Pub Lunch

Ramsbury Airfield Walk and Pub Lunch

Walk Summary

This is a great walk, and it is not too long. It starts and finishes at the Bell in Ramsbury, which does a great pub lunch. It is worth seeing the old Ramsbury Airfield from WW2, which was used by both the USAAF and the RAF. If you keep your eyes peeled, you can see some of the dugout bunkers left over from the airfield.

Parking

There is parking as part of the pub where the walk starts. If that is full, you should be able to find parking elsewhere in the village.

The Route

Walk directly south from the Bell along a road, until, after crossing the river you see a bridleway going to the left and right.
Take the bridleway to the right, and at the first right take the footpath. Head up a short but steep climb with great views across the Kennet valley. Follow this footpath, taking the left at the T junction with another footpath, before eventually turning right to follow the path of one of the old runways. This is the Ramsbury Airfield this walk is named after.
Wiggle your way through the farmyard after walking straight along the old runway, eventually meeting a road. Take a left along the road, following it, and just before the road takes a sharp left turn which would take you back to Ramsbury, take a right onto a track.
Follow this track for a short while, taking the first left onto a another track. Follow this track, crossing straight over the crossroads, until, after descending a little bit, you see a bridleway going off to the left.
Take this bridleway, until, after going down the hill, you join another bridleway, going left, passing by a house, until you reach the road you first left. Take a right, and follow this road over the river until you are back at the pub.
